It all started in a raging inferno. As the New York Underground Hip-Hop Producer, Neurologists, saw his childhood home, along with all of his possessions, and his home studio take to the air as glowing embers he thought his life was over; never mind his career. While the firefighters saw it necessary to save a case of beer from the seventh level of hell that was Neurologists home they tossed most of his studio out of a rear window to haphazardly collide with the earth below. Through sheer luck, Neurologists was able to save the hard drive from his mixing board and reclaim almost the entirety of his masterwork “As The Dark Settles”. The rest of his life however was not as easily reclaimed. Childhood photos, his high school diploma, and his personal papers were all lost; all he had were the clothes on his back and the devastation and rubble that now occupied the space where his childhood had occurred.
At this time Neurologists was transient-- staying in trailers and basements to have a roof under his head. When he finally got a trailer next to the husk of his former home the night wind whistling through the window frames where the glass had shattered from the intense heat would haunt him in his nights. From this desperate and direly depressing scenario came the beginning of something great.
In August 2007 he decided to contact his friend and collaborator Brandon Melendez to film and edit what would become the “Widow” music video. “Widow” was filmed with no budget whatsoever using Sony Handicams and Windows editing software. The process took four days. The horror and suspense style of the video was infused with their own idiosyncratic brand of humor. This project got ideas rolling on the next project: Heffs.
Heffs was the true forbearer of the real project to come. Driving around the neighborhood to the backdrop of “Sick Individual feat. Mista Sinista” from “As The Dark Settles” Steve 1989 was brought into the video fold. The trio went driving around in their car harassing the heffas and sloth-like of the surrounding neighborhoods. This was when New York Originals was conceived.
New York Originals is a video magazine that infiltrates the New York Underground scene. Using the bare minimum of equipment, New York Originals, surveys the backstage, general admitinance floors, and alleyways surrounding the Hip-Hop scene of the Greater New York Area. The gritty view provided by handheld cameras, night-vision lenses, and shuffling bodies creates a true to life representation of what the scene looks like. From tagged up walls to bass heavy ambient noise New York Originals delivers New York Hip-Hop unapologetically and with extreme vigor for the genre. Interludes provide for some of the same uproarious character displayed in “Widow” and “Heffs”.
Since the beginning of the project in July 2008 New York Originals has had numerous finds and features while scouring the scene. The process of creating the videos has come along way since the days of “Widow”. When the footage comes home it is edited in Brandon Melendez’s studio where all the graphics, logos, and designs are engineered. Then the backdrop of the Neurologists’ original beats are added to bring a specific vibe of evil and intensity to the project. All of these elements combined with the unmistakable personality of Steve 1989 make New York Originals a visual and auditory pleasure, as well as an illuminating and entertaining one for any true Hip Hop fan.
